SGL for USaR is informed by the reality of managing a highly hazardous, and unstable, operating environment, with large numbers of injured, entrapped and vulnerable casualties needing help.

The devotion, courage and expertise of rescuers need to be matched by tools, procedures and technology that will enable safe and effective responses if, or rather when, they are called upon to respond to a large-scale disaster.

This integrated project has marshaled a pan-European interdisciplinary project team to produce a well-balanced consortium of 21 partners including rescue teams, researchers and SMEs along with the support of 15 LOIs. The project will use a multidisciplinary approach in order to advance the state-of-the-art regarding a wide spectrum of Urban Search and Rescue Operations issues, including: effective and reliable casualty location methods; interoperability of data and systems; coordination between different units and disciplines; effective structural and environmental assessments of conditions in, and under ruins; medical monitoring of trapped casualties; and the location and differentiation of deceased casualties.
